STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Students from outside the city have various accommodation options in Trieste. 

Hall of Residence

If they fulfil the necessary academic and economic requirements and are on the ranking list drawn up by ARDIS, students may be able to apply for a room.

University Residence in the former Military Hospital

This modern and functional residence accommodates students, researchers and academic staff from all over the world. It was created following the renovation of the former Military Hospital, an imposing building built in 1863 during the time of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire in Trieste.
The Luciano Fonda University College provides a number of grants to cover accommodation in the residence, so offering students of merit the opportunity to study in Trieste.

Trieste offers various halls of residence, many of which associated to the local diocese.

Many students find accommodation through the different notice boards in the University, and many others use the Internet.

Students also frequently make use of social networks and different Facebook groups.

NON-EU STUDENT

Short or long term study visa may be granted to foreigners willing to enrol or pre-enrol in graduate and post graduate Programmes (Post graduate training, PhD), to attend single courses, to take part in exchange programmes, etc. upon the submission of specific documentation.

Foreigners holding a visa for study (long term Type D) need to apply for the permit of stay for study purposes by 8 days from their arrival in Italy. Please check the application procedures.

CANTEENS

On the main university campuses, ARDIS provides various canteens which students can use at special rates. Further reductions are also available depending on individual economic circumstances.

TRANSPORT

Through ARDISS, students can also obtain special season ticket rates on both local train and bus services.

Reductions are available for:

  • all students enrolled for the academic year 2020/21 at the Universities of Trieste and Udine.
  • all students enrolled for the academic year 2020/21 at the “G. Tartini” Music Conservatory in Trieste and the “J. Tomadini” Music Conservatory in Udine.
  • all students attending the Istituti Tecnici Superiori (I.T.S. – Technical Secondary Schools) di Trieste, Udine e Pordenone
  • all doctoral students enrolled at the Universities of Trieste and Udine.
  • all students attending a Doctoral or Master’s course at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (S.I.S.S.A. - International School of Advanced Studies) in Trieste.
  • all students attending teacher training courses (TFA) at the Universities of Trieste and Udine.

The only requirement is to be regularly enrolled and no more than one year behind with course studies.

Trieste bus system is extensive and comprises more than 50 lines. It is managed by Trieste Trasporti.

Tickets are not sold in the bus but at tobacconist's, bars and newsagents in the city.  Click here to check the sale points.  

Fares change depending on the distance and length of journey: 

- one way ticket (orario intera rete) €1.35;    
- daily ticket (giornaliero rete) €4.60;  
- monthly ticket (Abbonamento mensile) €28.50 (1 line) or € 35.75 (all bus lines);
- fortnightly ticket (Abbonamento quindicinale) €19.35 (1 line) or €23.05 (all bus lines);  
- yearly ticket (Abbonamento annuale) €285 (1 line) or €357.50 (all bus lines).

Ferry boats lines connect Trieste with Muggia and other seaside resorts in Friuli Venezia Giulia during summertime: Grignano, Duino, Sistiana and Barcola. For more information click here.

HEALTH SERVICES

Italian students not resident in Trieste, as well as EU and non-EU students can have access to a family doctor and use the general medical services provided by the Family Clinics of the Trieste Integrated Health Service as specified in the conditions shown in the service's information sheet.

DAILY LIFE
Tax identification code

Tax code identification number is a personal Italian code which allows to identify individuals in their relations with public authorities and administrations. It is requested for example for the opening of a bank/postal account, for the stipulation of a work contract or to apply for the National Health Service (SSN – Sistema Sanitario Nazionale), to rent a flat, etc.

Tax codes are issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency).

You can directly access the section of the Agenzia delle Entrate-Revenue Agency, which contains information, forms and instructions to be followed in English, to obtain the issue of the tax code.

Bank or post account

A personal current account which you can open in a bank or post office. An Italian current account is requested to get the salary paid.

If you need to open a bank/post account you have to provide the following documents:

  • passport or valid ID;
  • tax Identitification number (Codice Fiscale);
  • recent utility bill (as proof of address);
  • Italian mobile phone number;
  • residence certificate or valid permit of stay and proof of your condition (work contract or payslip/fellowship/etc.).

We inform you that there is an ATM of the Unicredit Bank in the Principal Building "A", left wing corridor on the ground floor.

Cinemas: there are several cinemas scattered throughout the city. Visit the website https://www.triestecinema.it/ to learn about film programming.

For cultural events visit triestecultura.it.

Theatres: there are several theatres around the city. The principal ones are:

Teatro Rossetti which offers prosa and musical performances;

Teatro Lirico G.Verdi is one of the oldest running opera houses.

Teatro La Contrada that offers prosa performances also in dialect.
