Trieste, technology, sea protection. These are three components, and together with marine robotics, new digital information methods and testimonials of researchers and highest level guests, they will attract to the International Innovation Summit, organized by the Department of Economic, Business, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences “Bruno de Finetti” (DEAMS) of the University of Trieste, as part of the InnovaMare Interreg project Italy-Croatia, that will take place on the 28, 29 and 30 October by organizing six webinars.

“Let’s try a new way of discussing and disseminating scientific knowledge. Thanks to digitalization, this will give the opportunity to a broad audience to share the most recent evolutions in the field”, says Prof. Guido Bortoluzzi from the University of Trieste, who conceived this event.

In Prof. Bortoluzzi’s idea, scientific research progress has to be shared among researchers and experts in the sector, then these changes may directly affect their activities. But at the same time, continues Bortoluzzi, “in these uncertain times for the world of information, it is important to confirm to the broad audience the authority of scientific research by giving all the possibility to access results, especially when these are directly connected to life in a city like Trieste, fully involved in its relationship with the sea”.

As previously mentioned, the three-day Innovation Summit is offered in a hybrid modality, during the morning webinars there will be debates between specialists in the sector of marine robotics and sea pollution, these are classified as “Tech” events. Whereas in the afternoon, the same topics will be disseminated on educational level during some virtual conversations, classified as “Pop” events that will involve highest level guests, who through their testimonials and real life experiences will make the subjects easy to understand to a non-specialist audience.

“Taking advantage of new technologies in digital communication, widely used during the lockdown”, said Prof. Bortoluzzi, “we organized six webinars, each lasting 50 minutes, which may be attended both by experts and non. It’s a new formula aiming to approach scientific research results that virtually change events and make them accessible to everyone”.

Summarizing the scheduled programme, we start on Wednesday 28 October at 11.00 with the firs event "Underwater drones, what are they and how can they be useful to us?”, chaired by Eleonora Di Maria from the University of Padua, guest speakers Diego Lazzarin from Saipem, Emanuele Rocco from Witted and Nikola Mišković from the University of Zagreb. At 17.00 the educational part starts with the intervention “The sea from above, research and innovation from space to the sea”, during which Anna Gregorio and Guido Bortoluzzi will interview the astronaut Umberto Guidoni and Ivona Cetinić from the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.

Thursday 29 October the scientific event “How to use technology to face sea pollution” chaired by Martina Rossi from Mare FVG will offer a conversation among Maurizio de Pirro of Castalia S.C.p.A, Apostolos Papakonstantinou, Senior researcher from Marine Remote Sensing Group, Fabio Dalmonte, CEO and founder from SEADS-Sea Defence Solutions Ltd and Vjeran Piršić from the Association Eko Kvarner. The Pop event in the afternoon, starting at 17.00, is moderated by Piergiorgio Trevisan and Guido Bortoluzzi, and has a quite evoking title “Sailing among garbage”, with the contribution of the two sailors Margherita Pelaschier and Giovanni Soldini.

During the final day, at 11.00, Domagoj Šarić – Croatian Chamber of Economy, will interview Giuseppe Saragò from Wärtsilä Spa, Raffaele Dayan from COO HiNelson Srl and Emir Džanić, Funifier from EUROPE d.o.o.

The last event in the afternoon “A circular Economy for a circular society”, chaired by Valentina De Marchi from the University of Padua, will host Andrea Illy, President of illycaffè and co-President of the Regenerative Society Foundation and Jeffrey Sachs (tbc), Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at the Columbia University and co-President of the Regenerative Society Foundation.

In order to attend the webinars, a registration on the event website www.units.it/innovamare is needed.
