Privacy Policy

Updated Privacy Notices in accordance with the 'European Regulation regarding the protection of personal data' (2016/679)

The University of Trieste is updating its notices in accordance with the new European Regulation 2016/679 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data.
All notices will soon be updated.
In the meantime, existing notices shall further include the additional information detailed below:
 

Data Controller and Data Protection Officer (DPO)

Lawfulness of the data processing

In addition to the details given in the individual notices, all data processing is guaranteed to respect the principles stated in the European Regulation 2016/679, particularly with regard to the the lawfulness, fairness and transparency of the processing, the use of the data exclusively for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes compatible with the processing, respect of the principles of data minimization, accuracy, integrity, confidentiality and accountability, as well as the limitation of the period of storage (Article 5 of the Regulation).

Rights of Data Subjects

Data subjects, i.e. individuals to whom the personal data refers, have the right, at any time, to demand confirmation or otherwise of the data, its content and its origin.

Furthermore, data subjects also enjoy the rights specified in sections 2, 3 and 4 of Chapter III of the European Regulation 2016/679 (e.g. to request that the Data Controller provide access to and rectification or erasure of personal data; to restrict processing concerning the data subject; to object to processing; and to request data portability).

Subjects also have the right to:

  • revoke consent at any time, without, however, prejudicing the lawfulness of the processing based on consent granted prior to the revocation;
  • lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

In exercising these rights, data subjects can contact the Data Controller at the addresses given above.

Notice in accordance with Articles 13 and 14 of the EU Regulation 2016/679

In accordance with Articles 13 and 14 of the EU Regulation 2016/679 specifying provisions regarding data protection, we inform you that the personal data that you have voluntarily provided to the University of Trieste will be processed in such a way as to guarantee their security and confidentiality, as indicated in the above mentioned regulation.

Purpose and means of data processing

Data from browsing

During normal operation, the IT systems and the software procedures ensuring the correct functioning of the website and the online services provided acquire some personal data. The transmission of these data is implicit when using Internet communication protocols, or is utilised to improve the quality of the service offered. The information is not collected in order to be associated to identified users, but could, by its very nature, allow the identification of users through processing and association. This data category includes IP addresses or the domain names of the computers employed by users to connect to the site, the Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) of the the resources requested, the time of the request, the method used to send the request to the server, the size of the file returned, the numerical code indicating the server response (success, error, etc.) and other parameters regarding the operating system and the users computing environment. The data are periodically cancelled and are used:

  • to collect anonymous statistical information (as data are aggregated) on the use of the site and the services provided in order to verify correct operation;
  • to solve operational problems, also through identifying access by users requesting this information.

The data could be used to ascertain responsibility in cases of possible cyber-crime to the detriment of the site.

Cookies

Website pages contain text, images, and other multimedia information, but may also include 'instructions' that are executed automatically by the user's browser. The webpage may also hold instructions to store information on the user's device (cookie). Read the extended notice on the use of cookies by the University of Trieste.

Data use and storage

The data collected are processed exclusively for statistical analyses with the sole aim of improving the services offered and for the minimum period necessary to provide the service.

Disclosure and transfer of data

The data collected will not be disclosed or transferred to third parties. In performing their respective functions and in accordance with instructions received, Data Controllers or Data Protection Officers may access the data only to undertake the specific uses indicated in the present notice.

Personal data collected by the University are managed and stored on servers located within the University and/or on the external servers of suppliers providing specific services necessary for technical and administrative management. Exclusively for the purposes of the service requested, these suppliers have knowledge of users personal data and are duly nominated by the Data Controller in accordance with article 28 of the Regulation.

The Italian Data Protection Authority decision

Cookies

The pages of a website can contain text, images, and other multimedia information, but may also contain "instructions" that are automatically executed by the user's browser. The web page can also contain instructions for storing information on the user's device (cookies).

Cookies vary by their different intended use:

  • Technical cookies are intended to improve the browsing experience or to provide a specifically requested service;
  • Profiling cookies are used to obtain information about the user that can be exploited for other uses not requested by the user, for example to transmit advertising messages of particular interest to the user.

Cookies at the University of Trieste

The Protection Authority decision (see text for full definition of the terms) establishes, for the protection of users, that each site must declare what type (purpose) of cookie it uses.

In this respect, we confirm that, in general, when accessing web pages or services provided by the University of Trieste, i.e. pages with URL ...units.it/..., and unless otherwise and explicitly stated, only technical cookies are used. In the main, the University of Trieste does not produce or publish web pages that employ profiling cookies.

Any possible exception to this policy is clearly marked on each page/service affected by the exception.

Third-party cookies

Some web pages of the University of Trieste incorporate third-party services. For these pages, the policy followed with respect to cookies is that of the external suppliers of these services.

Some cases in which third-party services are used:

  • services that allow for interaction with social networks (eg "social plugins") or other external platforms (e.g. viewing Youtube videos, Google Maps);
  • when the option "in tutto il campus" (in all university web pages) is selected in the University search engine, the Google Indexing Service is used;
  • in some questionnaires, Google generation services can be used;
  • when referring to sharing services on the web page.

In all these cases, the cookie policy followed is set and developed by the respective vendor who is external to the University.

The ...units.it/... web pages also use the Google Analytics service for statistical purposes. However,only aggregate (non-personal) data are processed.

How to limit the use of cookies

You can block or limit the use of cookies by changing your browser privacy or security options. In particular:

  • You can view which cookies are currently stored by your browser;
  • You can delete all the cookies or selectively just those you do not want;
  • You can block the use of all cookies (with this choice, there is no guarantee of full availability to all the services on this web site);
  • You can block the use of third-party cookies from sites other than the one you are viewing;
  • You may allow the use of cookies for some sites.
