Remember, you cannot be enrolled in more than one university course at the same time, even at different universities (except for single courses for students enrolled at another university).

If you wish to interrupt your studies for one or more academic years, simply do not pay the first instalment of your fees. You do not need to inform the Student Secretariat.

WARNING: During the years in which you suspend your studies, you cannot undertake any academic activities (attend courses, take examinations, etc.). To avoid forfeiting your studies, read the information on this page.

You should request an ISEE for each year of suspension, since, as specified in the Fees Notice, it could effect the amount of fees that you will pay when you return to studies.

Suspending your academic career

If you wish to attend:

  • A course at a foreign university
  • A military academy
  • A school of specialisation, a doctorate or master’s course at this or another university
  • An Active Training Internship (T.F.A.)
  • A Special Qualification Path (P.A.S)

you must suspend your studies. Otherwise, you could violate the rule regarding simultaneous enrolment. Complete the form to suspend your studies, pay the stamp duty of €16.00 and submit the form to the Student Secretariat of your course. You must also surrender your university registration book/student card and any books taken out on loan from the University libraries.

When you suspend your studies, payment of fees and contributions must have been made up to the preceding academic year, and you must not pay the first instalment of fees for the current academic year (which cannot be reimbursed). Only if you have already paid the first instalment and make your application after the deadline for the subsequent instalments will these also be payable.

To return to studies that you have suspended, see the page: Returning to study.

Abandoning your studies

If you wish to abandon your university studies definitively and no longer pay fees, complete the abandon studies form at any time, pay the €16.00 stamp duty and submit the form together with your university registration book/student card to the Student Secretariat of your course of study. You can also send the form together with a copy of your document of identity by post to the following address: Università degli Studi di Trieste - Ufficio Segreteria studenti - Piazzale Europa 1 - 34127 Trieste

After abandoning your studies:

  • you have no right to a refund of fees paid;
  • if you are a non-EU student, your residence permit for study is revoked (for a new enrolment, you must contact the International Students Office);
  • If you had Ardiss benefits, find out if these will be revoked;
  • you must return any books taken out on loan from the University libraries;
  • you can request certificates of your academic record;
  • you can re-enrol (without any reductions for merit) and request recognition of the examinations taken. See the page: Returning to study.

Forfeiting your studies

If you forfeit your studies, your university career will be automatically annulled and you will loose your student status, even if you have paid your fees.

Students enrolled in or after academic year 2011/12

Your studies are forfeited if you do not gain any credits for five consecutive academic years, unless the regulations of the course of study specify otherwise.

Students enrolled in or before academic year 2011/12

You forfeit your studies, if you have not taken (successfully or otherwise) an examination for eight years, or since your last year of enrolment (even following a change of course), or as a student repeating studies. The situation most favourable to the student is considered.

Your studies will not be forfeited if you have passed all your examinations/undertaken the learning activities specified in your study plan and you only have to take the final examination, unless the regulations of the course of study specify otherwise.

If you have forfeited your studies:

  • you can request reimbursement of any fees paid after the date of forfeiture;
  • you can request certificates of your academic records;
  • you can re-enrol (without any reductions for merit) and request recognition of the examinations taken. See the page: Returning to study;
  • In case of doubt, contact the Student Secretariat of your course of study, then complete the forfeit form and submit it with your university registration book.
