Quality Policy

The University’s Quality Assurance System

The Quality Assurance System (QAS) is the set of processes and responsibilities adopted by the University to guarantee that the aims set out in the Quality Policy are realised and that all actors in the system are aware of their roles and perform their tasks promptly and competently. Moreover, the service provided should be effective and the actions undertaken correctly documented, allowing the outcomes to be assessed by analysing appropriate performance indicators and stakeholder satisfaction.

Self-assessment and Improvement
Performance Monitoring Indicators

Primarily, the Quality Assurance System makes reference to indicators identified by ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes).
The Quality Supervision Board plays a key role in the realisation of the Quality Assurance (QA) System. The Research Assessment Committee (CVR) is a technical board of 15 members, one for each subject area taught in the University.
For teaching, the Quality Supervision Board provides course coordinators with a series of indicators regarding students’ academic careers, in order to monitor course progress. For research, instead the Research Assessment Committee (CVR) defines and periodically updates the standards, parameters and criteria to analyse and assess the University’s research.

Stakeholder satisfaction

The University of Trieste has also initiated a self-assessment programme using specific questionnaires to analyse its ability to respond to the needs of different stakeholders, above all the students. The aim is:

  • to complete the monitoring of the quality of teaching and services and to highlight strengths and weaknesses;
  • to identify appropriate measures to improve weaknesses.

Roles and responsibilities in Quality Assurance
Assessment Body

The Assessment Body is a collegial body set up under article 1, section 2 of the Law 370/99  (link to the Law in Italian).
The Assessment Body can verify the quality and effectiveness of teaching, with reference to indicators set out by the departmental joint staff-student committees. It also assesses the research undertaken by departments and the adequacy of the academic and professional curricula of those holding teaching contracts under article 23, section 1 (in collaboration with the work of ANVUR).
The Assessment Body is also responsible for the assessment of the University’s staff and infrastructure, in order to promote merit and improvements in organisational and individual performance.
In accordance with the University Statute, the Assessment Body comprises between five and nine members, prevalently from outside the University, with high-level professional qualifications and experience in the field of assessment. There are also one or two student representatives nominated by the Student Board for questions relating to teaching assessment.
The Assessment Body remains in office for three years.

Quality Committee

Quality Committee plays a key role in the realisation of the University’s Quality Assurance (QA) System through:

  • supervision of the QA procedures throughout the University;
  • proposal of common QA tools and of training to ensure their application;
  • support for course coordinators and department directors regarding activities common to teaching and research;
  • verification of the effective existence of quality, which requires the adoption of appropriate, pertinent and sustainable monitoring systems.

Technical and administrative support to the Quality Committee is provided by the staff Unit Quality, Statistics and Assessment,  (page in italian) which currently guarantees coordination with those University bodies variously involved in the Assessment, Self-assessment and Accreditation (Autovalutazione, Valutazione e Accreditamento - AVA) system.

The Research Assessment Committee (Commissione per la Valutazione della Ricerca - CVR -)

Assessment of scientific research is an important element of public policy.
The Research Assessment Committee (Commissione per la Valutazione della Ricerca di Ateneo -  CVR) is responsible for the internal assessment process.The committee comprises fifteen members, one for each subject area in the University.
The CVR provides the University’s governing, assessment and control bodies with cognitive and instructive elements to guide strategies regarding academic research and the third mission activities.
In the broadest sense, the CVR promotes the study, testing, application and diffusion of assessment methodologies and practices used to survey, analyse and support the quality of the University’s academic research.
Each year, the CVR assesses academic publications with reference to weighting tables that take account of editorial profile.
