L'Università degli Studi di Trieste a ESOF2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has reoriented the axis of ESOF2020, and biomedical science has taken on a central role. Hospital structures have worked relentlessly in the past months and all scientific sectors have collaborated globally to produce tangible and translational results. The session entitled “Experiences of pandemic crisis surge and research-guided responses” will therefore focus on the treatment protocol for the most severe cases of COVID-19 pneumonia: a prolonged low dose cortisone-based therapy administered intravenously. The treatment has been designed by the Department of Pulmonology of ASUGI - Trieste, in collaboration with 14 Italian research centres, and has been proved to reduce by 71% the risk of mortality in patients. The session has been organised by Marco Confalonieri, manager of ASUGI and professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Trieste, in collaboration with Nicol de Manzini, Head of the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Health Sciences, and with the support of RobertoDi Lenarda, Rector of the University of Trieste. The session will be moderated by Sergio Paoletti, President of AREA Science Park, and professors Gerard J. Criner (Temple University - Philadelphia), Mauro Giacca (University of Trieste, King’s College London), Patrick Maxwell (Cambridge University), and doctor Philippe Buchy (Director of Scientific Affairs and Public Health at GSK Singapore) will participate in the session with their different experiences and contributions.
