L'Università degli Studi di Trieste a ESOF2020
The session will focus on the increase in forced migration on a global scale, which concerns increasingly more scientists and scholars who find themselves in the position of having to relocate to be able to research and teach. Nestled between Eastern and WesternEurope, Trieste is the ideal platformto test strategies andnewpolicies toprotect scholars. In 2018, 10 international scientific institutions (UNITS, UNIUS, SISSA, ICTP, ICGEB, TWAS, OGS, IAP, INAF, FIT) located in Friuli Venezia Giulia joined an initiative to support scientist refugees and asylum seekers. Furthermore, the European Commission has been funding initiatives across Europe to support researchers at risk, InSPIREurope in particular. How could European politics improve to offer better support to scientists at risk? What role does international diplomacy play in achieving sustainable solutions? How can scientist refugees be drivers for change in scientific networks, acting as liaisons between their countries of origin and diaspora communities? This session has been designed in collaboration with CIMCS, the Centre for Migration and International Cooperation on Sustainable Development of the University of Trieste, the network of scientific institutions of the MoU and Scholars at Risk.
